There are several ways that you can tackle anxiety and stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here’s taking a look at the same:

  1. Have a routine in place for day to day activities - You should have a clearly structured routine and plan for every single day. There should be demarcation done for your work and private activities, giving you more control over uncertainties in this phase. Divide the day into smaller tasks and activities while making sure that you have plenty of time to invest in your hobbies, recreational pursuits, relaxation and doing things that you like. Having a daily work routine with regular breaks will make you leave the desk and reinvigorate yourself. Focus on keeping time for healthy meals and getting ample sleep too.
  2. Exercise on a regular basis - Exercising regularly will boost your health considerably, particularly if you are stressed out. The WHO (World Health Organization) has recommended 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorously intense physical exercise every week. Exercising for at least 15-20 minutes each day will go a long way towards lowering and combating stress considerably.
  3. Consume news items in moderation - Do not be glued to the news all the time, particularly if it deals with coronavirus cases and related aspects. Excessively watching the news will only increase your stress. Has a self-imposed restriction on watching and reading news and focus only on what is relevant for you and your community or your loved ones.
  4. Spend some time amidst nature - Try and spend some time amidst nature and plants. It will have a positive impact on alleviating stress and enhancing overall health greatly. Studies have shown that connecting with Nature for only 20 minutes will considerably help in lowering levels of stress hormones. Take a little walk in the park if it is possible and permissible. Go to the terrace, patio, backyard or wherever it is possible to enjoy a little patch of green. Time that you spend amidst nature contributes greatly towards mental and physical wellbeing alike. It also helps in lowering blood pressure levels significantly along with your heart rate, muscle tension and the stress hormones as well. Even in Scandinavia, where there are freezing temperatures outside, people still get outdoors for enjoying the open air life as they call it. This is because they know the positive impact of being outdoors and connecting with Nature. It feels much better than what you will initially think, perceive or expect. Also add more plants and flowers to your balcony, terrace, window and other areas of the home. Simply getting a plant for your working desk will go a long way towards reducing overall anxiety and stress greatly.
  5. Controlled breathing always works - Following a strategic breathing technique will work whenever you are feeling too overwhelmed or stressed out. Do not keep your body stressed for an overtly long time since the flight/fight response, which suppresses the immune and digestive systems, may otherwise impact overall health levels. Hence, reverse the procedure with controlled breathing techniques. Slow down your breathing and regulate intake of oxygen; calm down stress levels. 3-5 minutes of such controlled breathing each day will help you a lot.
